Geocache Description:

This series, FWP or Famous Wisconsin People, will acknowledge the accomplishments of some well-known (and maybe not so well-known) individuals from our state.

Born Erik Weisz, and later known as Ehrich Weiss, Harry Houdini arrived in the US and settled in Appleton, WI in 1878 at the age of four. He was one of seven children. His father Rabbi Mayer Samuel Weisz worked as the Rabbi at the Zion Reform Jewish Congregation. Harry would claim to have been born in Appleton, but he was actually born in Budapest, Hungary.

Houdini’s (Ehrich Weiss’s) first professional appearance was as a trapeze artist at the age of nine. He later became a professional magician in 1891 and began calling himself Harry Houdini to pay homage to two magicians whom he admired. Harry was known for acts involving escape- from straightjackets, handcuffs, jail cells, chains, water-filled containers, etc. Harry would thrill audiences with his feats. Houdini died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix at age 52. There are conflicting reports as to whether or not his death was caused by blows to the stomach which he received that same day from a university student. He is buried in New York.

You are searching for a small camouflaged container placed on the bike path along HWY 36/Loomis Road in honor of Harry Houdini’s accomplishments.
