I have always liked White Pines. Their elegant, windblown shape is always a pleasure to see on a hike.
It is Ontario's provincial tree and one of eastern North America's most commercially valuable trees. Most mature white pines were cut in the 1700-1800's as their tall, straight trunks made excellent ship masts.
White pines live about 200 years and produce seeds after 20-30 years. Seed production fluctuates with good crops every 3-5 years and little or no production in between.
