Venford Top-Up Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

dartymoor: This cache was ridiculously easy to find, so to have so many DNF means it's probably gone. Freeing the space for others.

Geocache Description:

Please write an interesting log, not just TFTC or a cut and paste - I enjoy reading about your visit and it's very boring to get dull logs. Be inventive!

A cache placed beside the outfall from Swincombe Intake, 3.2 miles due west. Water is piped from there,  following the contours much as the Wheal Emma Leat does (I believe, I've not been able to find a pipe map), finally emerging here to top up the Venford Reservoir.

Venford Reservoir was built in 1907 and is fed by Holne Moor, which contains many Tin mines and workings. Swincombe Intake (complete with an Art Deco motif over the small building nearby) is worthy of a visit, and was the site of national controversy when in 1970 a plan to build a full scale reservoir there was thrown out by parliament (Leading to the creation of Roadford and also perhaps Meldon reservoirs)

There is a lovely footpath around the reservoir of just under a mile of easy walking and has many information boards, points of interest and even a set of well preserved tinner's moulds!

Cache placed with accordance with the Dartmoor National Park's Geocaching guidelines and with permission of the Conservation & Leisure Manager (Dartmoor), South West Lakes Trust.
