Geocache Description:

This cache brings you to Corio Oval that was, one of the homes of the mighty Cats, Geelong’s own AFL team

Geelong FC first kicked a football at Corio Oval in 1859 even though they did not begin playing games there until 1871, whenever their usual ground, Argyle Square, was unavailable. Argyle Square was a paddock on the corner of ‘Pako’ and Aberdeen Streets, Ashby (renamed Geelong West). This was the venue of the Geelong FC’s first match (vs. Melbourne) in 1860. It was a scoreless draw.

The official move to Corio Oval in 1878, coincided with Geelong’s name changing from the “Seagulls” to the “Pivotonians” (a reference to Geelong being the pivotal point for all shipping and railway routes in the region). The attendance record for Corio Oval was set on 29 August, 1925 when 26,025 fans saw Geelong defeat Collingwood by nine points (of course) .

In the interim, the club had assumed a new nickname, the Cats, which was adopted after a spate of losses early in the 1923 season prompted a cartoonist to suggest Geelong needed a black cat to bring it good luck

At the end of the 1940 season, the club was forced to relocate due to the oval being needed for military training during World War 2. Kardinia Park was decided upon as a temporary solution, The team went into recess during 1942 and 1943, and at the start of the 1944 season there was much debate over whether to return to Corio Oval. The supporters of Kardinia Park won out.

After the departure of football, the oval lay empty until 1956 when the Geelong Trotting Club held its inaugural meeting there, using it until 1978 when they relocated to Beckley Park, Corio.

In the early 1980s a hospital and residential houses were built on the oval, thus ending the existence of Corio Oval.

The cache is a micro within some camouflage.
