This is another in the H.C.C. series. Intended to bring people to interesting cemeteries throughout the county.
Huron County erected a House Of Industry/Refuge In October 1895.The home was often called “Castle French”. Among the first residents were Sarah Lee of Brussels, Donald Ballantyne of Bayfield and Wesley Sutton of Exeter. Many of the residents did work within the house or on the farm. The first death to occur at Huronview was John Sadler, who was buried in Wingham. In May of that year, William Rae of Ashfield died and was buried on the farm. By 1929 there were over 120 graves on the site, none of which had tombstones. In 1931 the County Council paid for the House of Refuge burial ground to be fenced, levelled, and cared for in perpetuity. A cairn was placed on the site, with a tablet inscribed with the names of those buried at Huronview.
