This is a BOAT ONLY cache and is one of the 5 new caches we placed on the Owasco Lake Inlet for the 2012 season.
This is a BOAT ONLY cache and is one of 5 new caches we placed on the Owasco Lake Inlet. This fertile valley was cultivated by the Indians. Around 1850 a plank road was built across it and later replaced by the Lehigh Valley Railroad. Now it’s a protected Nature Preserve with 2 miles of hiking trails maintained by “Cayuga Parks & Trails”. Expect to see fields of ferns, deer, muskrats, blue herons, beavers and bird song in abundance.
This water is suitable for beginner paddlers in kayaks or canoes; however, can be narrow, swift and winding before the Route 38 Bridge. Downstream of the bridge, the current will seem to dissipate but don’t let your guard down. The current continues below the surface so be on the lookout for downed trees and other obstacles along the way. When we placed the caches, there was only two downed tree which was possible to maneuver around easily. Caution: move in slow and be mindful of funky undercurrents when obstacles are in the waters path. Any doubts ... portage around them.
Launch site: N42 43.499 W76 26.689
There is a grassy bank on the north side of the Route 38 Bridge to easy launch from. Parking areas are available on both sides of the bridge.
Take Out: N42 45.290 W76 27.798
Is at the Cayuga Parks & Trails launch where Owasco Inlet meets Owasco Lake. From Route 38 turn onto the road at the south end of the lake that goes to the Cascade Grill and South Shore Marina. As you reach the marina, continue straight past the brown “Cayuga Parks & Trails” sign onto a gravel road. It will snake to the mouth of the lake where you will find parking, easy boat launch access, porta-potty and one of 2 trailheads to the Nature Preserve Trails. For the ambitious paddlers, is it possible to launch and take out from this location.
Each cache is a small water proof match plastic container with a water proof log. Bring your own pen
Most can be obtained from the seat of your boat. A few may require stepping out of your boat a short distance, depending on water level. While you’re here, visit our boat cache: A Little Birdie Told Me [GC1BFFY], and, if you still have time, there are several land caches nearby.
Estimated time on the inlet 5.3 river miles [one way] will be 2-3 hours of paddling PLUS additional time for stops and searching.
RULES:
1. Never paddle alone for safety.
2. Mark your car at take out; the area will look different from the water.
3. Bring your own pen as pencil will not write on the water proof paper.
4. Be careful when you open the caches so things don’t fall out.
5. Sign log
Most of all ... Have a fun time, we always do!!
