Geocache Description:

The icebreaker Svyatogor was built for the Imperial Russian Navy in 1916. During the allied intervention against Bolsheviks in Northern Russia (1918-1919), the Royal Navy scuttled it. They raised it for use in the White Sea. The ship was returned to the USSR in 1921 under the name Krasin.

The most legendary of Krasin’s duties is the rescue of the expedition Italia (May-June 1928). Commanded by Umberto Nobile, the airship left Milan for the Arctic. After they flew over the North Pole, the elevation control jammed in the downward position. All engines were stopped; the airship began to rise again, but the next day the airship was noticed to be falling. Even though Nobile ordered emergency powers and full elevators, the accident was inevitable. The airship’s control cabin hit jaggered ice and was smashed open. The sudden relieve of weight made the envelope of the ship rise again, trapping six crew members with it. Nine survivors and one fatality were left on the ice. It took about nine days for the SOS message to be received “on the continent”. Various rescuing expedition were organized Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, USSR, Sweden and the USA. During one of these rescue operations Roald Amundsen, the legendary Norwegian explorer was lost. It took more than 49 days before all the survivors (and the stranded would-be rescuers) were retrieved. Krasin took on board all the survivors who were left on the ice. It also picked up a crew of Russian pilots who made an unsuccessful landing after seeing two of the survivors from Italia.

During the Second World War, Krasin participated in many convoys. When the US government asked the Soviet Union for a lease or a purchase of one of their modern ice breakers, the Soviet Union offered Krasin.
Up until the 1950’s Krasin was the most powerful ice breaker in the world.
Today, the vessel is a museum ship, but nonetheless, it is fully restored to operating condition, and is ready to sail anytime.

Since there are a lot of navigational ship systems working around the given coordinates, the weaker GPS navigators may be messed up at times.
