Bike Maryland Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

WVTim: I apologize to the Geocaching community for taking so long to replace this cache. My new replacement required a cacher to almost have a pair of tweezers with them to access... who has tweezers when bike riding? With regret I am going to archive this cache. At one time this was the #1 Cache in MD.

I am a biker and loved the info on this cache page, giving good details of the GAP and C&O canal. The bike shop is sad for its removal and might be open to another cache if someone wants to place a cache at this HOT spot.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located between the C & O Canal and the WMRT Bike trails at a local bike shop within sight of bike trails. I have been wanting to make my first Maryland cache unique. Hopefully I have done that!! Not only is this cache different than anything you have ever seen, but the location has special meaning to us. It was looking for Snurt's caches on the WMRT several years ago that intrigued us enough to really get into geocaching. These bike trails have lots of great memories for us. I'm glad our first Maryland cache brings us back to the place that we started.

Maryland's Bike Trails

Maryland has some of the nation's premier bike trails.

The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) rail-trail offers 141 miles of hiking and biking between Cumberland, MD, and Homestead, PA, near Pittsburgh. We biked this crushed stone surface last year from Homestead, PA to Cumberland, then we picked up the C & O Canal to Washington DC. This continuous trail of 325 miles, was a truly a trip of a lifetime for us.

The Western Maryland Rail Trail (WMRT) can be accessed here in Hancock. This 23-mile bike trail is all paved. Hancock is a great location to access the trail. This trail offers a smooth nearly flat ride through the mountains plus scenic vistas and a bit of history and geology for added enjoyment. The pic above was taken on the WMRT a couple years ago, near Hancock on the WMRT trail.

The Cache

This cache is located at a local bike shop. Thanks to Dennis Hudson of C&O Bicycle for giving us to permission to place a cache at his store. Dennis and his staff have helped us with repairs and tubes several times on our bike trips thru Hancock. Thanks to Darren Button for sharing such a creative cache idea.

You will not be looking for anything you have ever seen before. Like all unique and custom built caches, it will require you to use great care in finding the cache and replacing it. This cache is in plain view. You may find Ground zero to be about 7-8 feet from the cache, interference from the buildings caused me to take the coords close by not exact. Please take note how you found the cache and be very careful to replace it exactly as you found it. Hours went into it's making.

Caution - Do not attempt this cache if you have a heart pacemaker.

Stop in and tell Dennis thanks for supporting our hobby. He might even be good for a hint should you need one.
