This series, FWP or Famous Wisconsin People, will acknowledge the accomplishments of some well-known (and maybe not so well-known) individuals from our state.
Eric Heiden, born on June 14, 1958 in Madison, Wisconsin, grew up in Shorewood Hills, Wisconsin as the older brother to his younger sister, Beth. Eric is an accomplished long track speed skater and road cyclist, who won an unprecedented five individual gold medals and set four new Olympic records and one world record during the 1980 Olympics. He is iconic in the skating world and is considered by some to be the best speed skater in history. In all, Heiden has set a total of 15 world records. He was one of the first “cross-over” athletes, competing as a racing cyclist after his speed skating career.
Eric attended UW-Madison, and graduated from Stanford University with his Bachelor of Science and medical degrees. Currently, he is a practicing physician, working as an orthopedic surgeon in the Salt Lake City, Utah area.
