A 2-part historical multi on the Chiltern-Rutherglen Road
Great Southern was one of the large mines operating in the plains between Rutherglen and Chiltern - you can see the remains of mining operation from Great Southern Rd to the North of this cache.
The large pools of water to either side of the road between the Start and GZ were formed by mining operations - they always give me the impression I'm driving along the coast! You can often see cows having a wade in the lakes- why do they do that?
The co-ords above take you to a historical sign describing the Great Southern State School. This is one of many historical signs around Rutherglen with interesting information from the gold rush days. Visit Rutherglen Museum for information about others.
To get the location of GZ you will need to read the sign and complete the co-ords as follows -
GZ = 36 deg 04.ABC 146deg 29.AEF
The school's walls were 1A feet high.
The school number was 3B79
The buildings were removed C years after the school closed.
The Infant School was opened in 190E
7F children had to walk to Rutherglen or Lilliput schools.
The cache is a small Systema container with log sheet, pencil and dinosaur ( so open carefully!)
Please park well off the road at the Start - there is a track in to a gate near some old stockyards on the western side of the road. The distance from Start to GZ is about 600metres - you're safer driving rather than walking as traffic moves fast. There is ample parking on the gravel road at GZ.
