Geocache Description:

A black 200mL sistema located near to a statue of Willem de Vlamingh, just off the bike path in Burswood.

This sculpture of the Dutch navigator pays tribute to the significant part played by the early Dutch navigators in the discovery of the western coastline of Australia. The Dutch voyages to our coastline, which started with the visit of Dirk Hartog in 1616 and culminated with de Vlamingh's explorations of the 1696/1697 preceded the landing of Captain Cook on the east coast by more than a century.

Of course, the sculptures also seem to depict some form of confict between the early explorers and swans. Or maybe it's just that Willem's last name is "Vlamingh", similar to "flamingo", and everyone knows how much swans hate flamingos. Anyway, these two are clearly about to do battle. Perhaps the depiction of the swan with wings outstretched is similar to a horse rearing, indicating that this swan died in battle.

The views across from the shore to the city are also very good, especially at night.
