Located at the entrance to Hólar in Hjaltadalur
Hólar in Hjaltadalur is one of the main historic areas in Iceland. In 1106 Jón Ögmundarson was made the first bishop at Hólar. He started a school there which operated until 1802, when the office of the Holar bishop was cancelled. A bishop came back to Holar in 1986.
In 1882 a farmers college was started in Hólar. That school was the foundation of the present date Hólar University College.
This site marks the entrance to the Hólar campus and shows the sign from the 900 year celebration of schools in Hólar in 2006.
