Geocache Description:

Denver History - School

Denver has been around for a very long time. I have found reports of settlers as early as 1735. I have however been unsuccessful at finding very much information about schools before the turn of the last century.

What I did find out, follows:

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania legislature passed the Free School Act in 1838.

ARTICLE VII

Public schools.
Section I. The legislature shall, as soon as conveniently may be, provide by law for the
establishment of schools throughout the State, in such manner that the poor may be
taught gratis.

The township would not adopt this legislature until 1868. Becoming the last school district in Pennsylvania to adopt the legislation.

Then my information jumps to 1901 when the Denver schoolhouse was built on 403 Walnut St. This the old High School until the new one was built in 1955. At this time the old schoolhouse taught children from 1st through 6th grade. Sixth grade would eventually move to the High School building as Denver was growing.

In 1962 the Cocalico Middle school was built. This was the first Middle School to be approved in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. At this point, grades 1-5 were in the Walnut St Schoolhouse. Grades 6-8 were in the new Middle School building and 9-12 were in the High School.

This takes us to 1976 and the new (and current) High School building. Now the 75 year old schoolhouse has been closed and the children moved to the old High School building.

Additions have been made to all three of these schools in Denver over the years. The population has grown by leaps and bounds. Reinholds elementary school was closed in 1985 and Schoeneck was closed just last year, 2011. Consolidation. At least the Cocalico school district has done a super job with avoiding over crowded classrooms.

With all this time and all this change, you can still drive by that old schoolhouse on Walnut st. It is now an apartment building.
