There is a path along the top of the shore leading to both the new and old Keiss Castles.
Parking area at Keiss Harbour. Walk uphill to the corner and you will see a gate with a spring loaded entry. Follow the trail past 2 old lookout posts. You will also pass some ancient Broch sites. Continue along and eventually you will reach GZ.
Unfortunately, there is lots of rubbish on the shore but also lots of lovely yellow primroses ( which make up for it) and are in flower May to August.
The new/current Castle (white one) is still in use as a private residence and it replaced the former Keiss Castle on the shoreline in 1755 and was originally known as Keiss House. Over one hundred years later in 1860 the house was completely made-over and many new additions gave it the appearance of a castle.
It is known that the old Keiss Castle was built by George the fifth Earl of Caithness who reigned between the years 1582- 1643 a period of 61 years but the exact date of its erection is unknown. It is recorded that of his three castles ringed round the coast of Sinclair Bay the residence he favoured most was Keiss, spending a great deal of his time there.
The cache is a Klip and Lok box in a camo bag. Please return it as you found it, tuck right in as wind can be a problem.
