I recently moved to SwissHome and saw how neat the area is and decided to put out a few caches to share the sites and give a little info. on a few spots. The cache is not camoed but hiding. BYOP
There is a parking area off the Hwy. on the river side. Take some time and enjoy the creek, river and rail bridge views.
The Oregon International Port of Coos Bay acquired the freight rail line linking the Coos Bay harbor with connections to the North American rail system at Eugene, Oregon, during March 2009 from the former owner Rail America who abruptly shut it down in September of 2007 without warning or notification. This was devastating to many of the mills in the Coquille and Coos Bay area as well as new company American Bridge that was counting on the railroad to ship steel products too big for highway travel. The result was loss of many jobs as companies switched to truck transport at a much greater cost and with a higher load on the environment and the highway system.
Congratulations to grch for FTF!
In 2010, thanks in part to huge efforts of our local State Representative Arnie Roblan and Congressman Pete DeFazio the Port received a $7.8 million ConnectOregon III grant and a $13.5 million Transportation Infrastructure Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) II grant. Both are funding rehabilitation of trestles, bridges, rail, ties and ballast. Once the work is completed, the rail line will have been restored to a mix of Track Classifications 2 (25 mph) and 3 (40 mph).
The rail line will now be operated as the Coos Bay Rail Link (CBR), and will serve the Coos County, western Douglas County and western Lane County region of southwest Oregon. Rail links through Eugene serve destinations and markets to the north, south and east.
The Port is engaged in rehabilitating much of the infrastructure in the corridor with the goal of restoring partial service on the line by mid 2011. Transit time between the Port of Coos Bay and Eugene will be eight to 10 hours. Rail interchange will be with the Union Pacific Railroad, and other regional shortline rail operations.
