Another replacement for the old Luther-Riley Historic Cemetery cache AND the Luther-Riley Historic Cemetery Revisited cache. The nano was still in place, but more recent clearing of the grounds made the hiding place a little too exposed to the neighbors so we decided to archive that one, too. Typical 4Swans micro container so please bring your own pen.
This is a small, historic cemetery near Luther's Corners in Swansea, MA. Please be respectful of the "residents". Most have been here over a century. If you take the time to look around, you may find some interesting inscriptions. Luther's Corners is actually down the road at the intersection of Old Warren Road, Pearse Road and Maple Avenue. Located at the intersection is the Luther Museum, home to many local artifacts including a recently discovered rare portrait of a young Lizzie Borden. The Luther Museum, run by the Swansea Historical Society, is open on Sundays in July and August or by appointment. The first Luthers came to the Corners around 1747 and owned houses on the corners, operated the store and also operated a tavern which is now a private home. The house on the opposite corner from the Luther Store is rumored to be haunted. Captain John Luther came to America (Taunton) from England in 1635. The Captain's sons, Samuel and Hezekiah, are ancestors of the Luthers in this area. Samuel came to Swansea in 1667 by way of Rehoboth and then Attleboro. He succeeded John Myles as the Elder of the Swansea Baptist Church and became known as Reverend Captain Samuel Luther. Hezekiah was also one of the first settlers in town and was a carpenter. Owners of the Luther Store descended from Hezekiah. Many more Luthers followed from the brothers. The school down the road is the Joseph G. Luther School. Joseph Gardner Luther was a descendent of Hezehiah. More information on the Luthers and Swansea History can be found in the book "The Swansea Stage Coach, A Local History" which can be purchased at the Luther Museum. Parking is along the road in front of either gate. Please be careful when exiting your vehicle. Be sure to check out the ironwork as you walk on in. Please do not dismantle any stone walls in search of the cache. That is not necessary. Cache is in a residential neighborhood so please do NOT attempt at night! No PI was visible at the time of the hide, but be on the lookout for it since there is some on the other side of the cemetery. On another note, the cemetery is called the Luther-Riley Historic Cemetery, but we couldn't find one R-i-l-e-y stone! Please let us know if you find one.
