Geocache Description:

Well well!

The co-ordinates take you to the junction of Kyrle Street, Edde Cross Street and Trenchard Street.

Kyrle Street was originally the home of the Ross Gas Works that occupied most of the south side of the street. This was built in around 1835 after an act was passed, in 1830, for "paving, cleaning, draining, lighting, regulating and improving the Town of Ross". It was run as private venture and Town Commissioners, who were appointed after the 1830 act, had no part in it. It was run as the Ross Gas Company Ltd.

Trenchard Street does not appear in trades directories from 1876 and is not named on maps after around 1900 and this may be for several reasons. One possibility is that Edde Cross/Trenchard Street has only relatively recently been developed to the levels as seen today, a second possibility is that Trenchard Street is a relatively new name for the lower part of the road.

Edde Cross Street, Ross-on-Wye, runs north - south from the junction between the High Street and Wilton Road down to where it becomes Trenchard Street at the point where Kyrle Street joins it although there is evidence that Trenchard Street used to extend right up to where New Street joins Edde Cross Street.

Looking at the sign for the well, behind you and to the right (as you look at the well sign) is a metal lamp post with a number on it = BCDE

Length of time you can park on Kyrle Street = F (sign is just around the corner)
