This cache was placed on May 3rd 2012 which is exactly 12 years after the very first cache was hidden by Dave Ulmer in the woods near Beaver Creek, Oregon. It was a black bucket with a log book and tradeables in. At time of publishing there were 1,743,784 active geocaches and over 5 million geocachers worldwide.
Dave placed a black bucket in the woods then placed the coords on a user group site. He called his idea of hiding a container for people to find, swap stuff and log there comments...Great American GPS Stash Hunt.
The original cache was placed @ N45 17.460 W122 24.800.
This was all made possible because the 24 satellites that make up the GPS were 'unlocked' as of midnight on May 2nd 2000. Until that time a GPS was only accurate to approx. 300 feet. or 100 M. (place GPS trash talk here!!!)
This cache is a 3 stage multi which will take you off of Kitchen rd. and on to private property. If your mode of transportation to ground zero is anything other then on foot leave it here. The owners of this land has given us permission to WALK along the field edges and green spaces. Please enjoy this unique area and take care to rehide caches so others will enjoy this experience as well as you.
A camera may be a good piece of equipment to bring as there are Deer, muskrats, Geese, Ducks and even Beaver in this area. With that in mind please keep the dogs on a leash. This is for everyone's safety. Keep the dog off the animals and the animals (beaver) off the dogs!
