The cache is a camoed container with log only, so, BYOP. This is a high muggle area, so, please be sure to secure the cache as it was hidden. The difficulty rating has been increased due to the canopy coverage. The cache cannot be obtained from the boardwalk trail. There is a hidden trail behind the Temple Mound that will put you on the right track

Our youngest daughter, Lizzy, has wanted to hide a series of caches at the Moundville Archaeological Park for a couple of years now. We emailed the parks director and he was gracious enough to grant permission to place the caches. There are a couple of rules that everyone need to know and follow.
1. Most of the caches are hidden along the trails. There is no need leave the trail area for any cache.
2. Leave nothing behind but your signature.
3. Please stay off of the mounds near the pathway. None of the caches are hidden on them or near the base.
4. Be respectful of the area.
We grew up in Moundville and the park was a playground to us both. As children we made the short trip, from our school, to visit the old museum, climb the Temple Mound and eat lunch. When we were teenagers we rode motorcycles along the road, camped in the campground, and attended the Easter Sunrise Service (for the non-locals, every year at sunrise on Easter morning the churches of Moundville depicted the final days of Christ). As young adults we brought our children here to fly kites and rockets. As our children grew older they all learned to drive in the park. Today the park is our geocaching playground.
Moundville Archaeological park is owned and operated by The University of Alabama, Who recently opened a refurbished museum, the Easter Sunrise Service is no longer held, and the trails have been revitalized.
From around 1000 AD until 1450 AD the area was home to the second largest settlement of Mississippian culture chiefdom, after Cahokia in Illinois. At its height, the village was approximately 300 acres in size, surrounded by a bastioned wooden palisade wall on three sides and protected on the other by the bluff overlooking the Black Warrior River.
Archaeologists have interpreted this community plan as a sociogram, an architectural depiction of a social order based on ranked clans. According to this model, the Moundville community was segmented into a variety of different clan precincts, the ranked position of which was represented in the size and arrangement of paired earthen mounds around the central plaza. By 1300, the site was being used more as a religious and political center than as a residential town. This signaled the beginning of a decline, and by 1500 most of the area was abandoned.
