Geocache Description:

Over The River & Over The River & Over The River..

< Three Rivers Confluence

The listed coordinates will take you to the St Joe Boulevard Pathway,a nice walkway right at the Three Rivers Confluence. The difficulty/terrain has been set as parking seemed to be my greatest issue. Not being from the area, I found a convient store at the corner of St. Joseph Blvd and Tennessee that is across the street from a trailhead. I parked at the nearby Three Rivers apartment complex right by the posted coordinates.

A confluence is a meeting of two or more bodies of water. It can either be of two types where a tributary joins a larger river called a main stem. Or in this case as you see before you two streams meet and become the source of a river.
Famous examples of major confluences would be The Madison, Jefferson and Gallatin Rivers in Three Forks, Montana form the confluence of the Missouri River, one of the longest rivers in the United States!

George Washington, at this time he was President of the United States, in 1790 had sent orders to secure Indiana. Afer two failed battles with the Miami Indians, General Anthony Wayne led the third battle and was victorius. The new fort was built by the Three Rivers and named in honor of General Anthony Wayne. The fort still resides by Three Rivers in the city of Fort Wayne, IN.

<Old Fort

The Maumee river flows out of Ft. Wayne into Northeastern Indiana and Northwestern Ohio. It was formed from Glacial Lake Maumee.
Lake Maumee drained in two stages (Lowest and Middle). The lowest stage retreated into the Grand River into Glacial Lake Chicago (Modern Day Lake Michigan)

The Middle Maumee had great flucuations in water level. This back and forth pattern formed a drainage to modern day Lake Erie. This involved a reverse drainage in what is now northeastern Indiana and northwestern Ohio.

The flowing water plays a role in erosion. It carries the soil and other materials to the surface. The four types of erosion of soil are tunnel, rill, sheet and gully.
With flowing rivers, it naturally will carry sediment in the flow and can often times leave deposits along the bank or make islands.

1.) Research Key Word "Lake Maumee" and give me the name of the Glacier it formed from at the end of the ice age.
2.) Take three Approximate measurements.  A & B) How wide are the two rivers flowing into the main river? C.) Measurement of the width of the main river at the confluence.
3.) What is the name of the main river?
4.) Do you see any islands formed by deposits of the flowing rivers?
5.) Optional: Post a picture of yourself with the Three Rivers Confluence in the background
