Geocache Description:

Mt Somers village is nestled into the foothills of the Southern Alps and is the gateway to a large part of the Canterbury high country. The official population of the village plus its immediate surrounds is 2307.The township sits in the shadow of Mt Somers. Mt Somers itself is an extinct volcano.

The village green is a fantastic project that the Mt Somers community are very proud of. Locals raised money to buy the land and the owner (also a local) donated money back from the sale to the project. All of the plantings are vegetation that are found in different areas of the NZ high country and the sculptures are made from Mt Somers limestone. Sculptors include Paul Deans and Bon Suter, the former's hand holding the ball was also bought by the locals and donated to the green. The 'arch' in question was donated by the former owners of the piece of land and the green and it's committee were recipients of a Trustpower Community Award. Thanks cazsteve for some local information.
