Just north of Hraun í Fljótum in the municipality of Skagafjörður is a small geocach waiting for you to be found logged and placed back in the same spot. The Cache is wating together with Þráinn, (Thrainn)
The cache is located in the former Holtshreppur which split out of Fljótahreppur at the same time other half became Haganeshreppur.
The road up in the pass of Siglufjarðarskarð was at the time one of the highest, road in Iceland in terms of altitude reaching up to 630 m. above sea-level. The pass was difficult to cross and some times lives were lost up there, at the turn of the 18th century people believed that air spirit was located there and took lives of people crossing the pass.
First trial to make descent riding track across the pass was undertaken in 1880-1882. In 1935 road making aimed to facilitate driving started, completed in 1947. On August 27th 1947 the fist scheduled vehicle arrived in Siglufjörður across the pass.
From Skagafjörður one drove through Hraunadal, Lavasvalley, before reaching the pass. In Hraunadalur the Road makers encountered Þráinn. To open a way for the road Þráinn got to be south of the new track, that was Þráins First new place.
Twenty years after the road across the Pass was opened, new road along the coast line was completed with the opening of Strákagöng through the Strákafjall. Then the licensed driver on the Siglufjörður route had Þráinn fetched down from Hraunadalur to the cross roads of where the new road continued along the coast from the curve up to the pass, there was Þráins second place.
In 1998 Þráinn was moved here, thus Þráins third place.
