Crash Site of the Sun Racer Flight
On April 7, 1936, a Douglas DC-2 crashed into Cheat Mountain near Uniontown PA Killing 12 of the 14 passengers and crew aboard. Pilot Otto Ferguson lost contact with the airport's radio navigation signal and tracked several miles off course. Fearing icing conditions, he descended in an attempt to find visual landmarks for navigation. Thick fog hindered him. He hit ice covered trees atop Cheat Mountain. The pilots were killed instantly. Flight attendant Nellie Granger, though injured in the crash got help after walking approx. 6 miles to a farmhouse by following nearby telephone wires to a home. Granger was hailed as a hero for her efforts to help despite her own injuries. She had managed to pull two passengers away from the burning aircraft and administered first aid. Of the 14 people aboard, 3 survived the crash, but one of those later died of infection. TWA continued to use the Sun Racer name and flight number throughout the 1930's. In 2002 a 475 pound granite monument was erected on the crash site to memorialize those killed in the accident.
