Easy find. In a tree that hangs over a public sidewalk. You should not need to go in anyone's yard to get this cache.
This is the first cache I have placed. I decided to put my caches in trees for two reasons. First, I would like to identify and learn to recognize different common and unusual tree types that are found around Washington State. Second, I don’t like bending over and digging under rocks. Tree branches are convenient for hiding things at eye level or above.
This Hawthorne tree (Crataegus) is sometimes known as a Thornapple, for good reason. Don’t ask your toddler to reach for the cache. Ouch! Hawthonrne is not native to the Northwest but is somewhat drought tolerant. The tree has nice white flowers in spring and red berries in the fall. Several types of birds congregate in this tree. I have seen Chickadees and Steller’s Jays and once a Gold Finch perched here.
Things grow fast in the spring and summer here. Please let me know if the area becomes too overgrown to reach for the cache. I will get in there with some loppers and clear things out when necessary. Good luck.
