Taylor has been a part of the Peace Region for over 90 years. A must stop at the Tourist Centre to learn what Taylor is all about! In 1896, Donald Herbert Taylor (Herbie), Taylor's namesake, moved west and took up a homestead at the Peace River Crossing (Peace River, AB) where he married Charlotte. Then in 1905 they moved to Hudson's Hope where he had taken a job as a factor for the Hudson's Bay Co. It was 1912 when Herbie, Charlotte and their children moved back down the river and were the first family to settle on the Flats. Herbie was a ferryman and trapper who maintained a Peace River crossing for fur traders, prospectors and homesteaders heading for the north. He also made a living by carving paddles and playing his fiddle for dances. Herbie and Charlotte lived in Taylor for the rest of their lives. Tourists: You may have heard of Taylor from the show Village on a Diet! You may have heard of Taylor because of the World Gold Panning Competitions. Whatever you have heard Taylor is a very quaint, friendly, well kept community. Taylor has a lot to offer! Come take a stop from your travels to visit the tourist information centre based in an old trapper's cabin. Come find a geocache too! If you are from the Peace River area it is always refreshing to become a tourist in your own community!
