The Twelve Caesars
This series is dedicated to the Twelve Caesars of the Roman Empire. They didn’t always have staying power as rulers but 2000 years have past and half of these guys are house-hold names.
Most of the following information is taken from the work of Suetonius, who’s biography of Julius Caesar and the first eleven Emperors of the Roman Empire was written in 121 AD.
Gaius Octavius Agustus Caesar
First Emperor of the Roman Empire
September 63 BC - August 14 AD
Octavius was the great nephew of Julius Caesar and is considered the first Roman Emperor. Julius Caesar adopted Octavius as his son and heir and upon Caesar’s death, Octavius had to finish the civil war that his great uncle started. He did so by defeating all other ‘Caesar hopefuls’ including Mark Antony. It is also widely believed that he killed Julius Caears’ son by Cleopatra to solidify his claim. As the war ends, he is the undisputed winner and the Roman senate give him the additional name of Agustus. Not to be outdone by Julius Caesar, Agustus names a month of the year after himself. He is known to have had ‘lifters’ in his shoes and copied the mannerisms of his great uncle in great detail. He created a police and fire department for Rome, saw to the maintenance of the aqueduct system, repaired the roadways and built several temples. On his deathbed he is supposed to have said: "I found a Rome of bricks; I leave to you one of marble". He died at the age of 75.
First To Find may claim a Brass Replica Roman coin.
