This cache is placed just off a sheep trail that can be accessed via several locations including foxhunter car park or keepers pond (recommended parking). It would make a good circular walk from either car park incorporating “The first in Wales”.
It’s also placed on my regular Mountain bike route so be sure to say HI! if you see me passing by!
A quick warning!
Be well prepared before starting towards this cache. The weather on the Blorenge can deteriorate very quickly, and the terrain is very rocky and boggy in places. Additionally enjoy your walk, but please respect the Blorenge. It's a World Heritage Site, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and it contains a number of important scheduled national monuments.
Recommended parking is at Keepers Pond. This pond once fed steam engines at the Garnddyrys Forge, about ¾ mile on the hillside below. The pond is known as "Keeper's Pond" after the gamekeeper's cottage that once stood nearby.
From the car park take the footpath around the north side of "Keeper's Pond" to the plaque at the far end. Continue in the same direction up the gravel path, and pick up the route of one of the earliest primitive railways associated with the Blaenavon Iron Company. This tram road was built around 1795 to bring limestone from the quarries at the northern headland of the Blorenge to the ironworks. It fell out of use around 1804, due to technical problems at the quarry, and the plate track was taken up in 1813, and has been scheduled by Cadw as an "ancient monument” so please treat it as such.
From the route of the tram road, note the fine views over the Usk Valley to Sugar Loaf. Looking west there are amazing views of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons. Almost a dozen of the "Welsh One Hundred Peaks" can be seen from here on a clear day. On a foul day you will be lucky to see the back of your hand!
The cache container is a green ammo box with an official green Geocaching.com logo on the side.
Please sign the log book and carefully replace the cache in its hiding place to protect it from being “Muggled”.
The cache contains a variety of kids toys and some survival gear (you never know up the Blorenge!) and a small trophy for the first to find! Even a rubber bone for the first dog to find!
