Geocache Description:

Fire can be very dangerous and Wethersfield is no different to any other village in having its fair share of dramatic fires.

An article in the Wethersfield News in 2008 talks of the night the Windmill burned to the ground and on the same day Mr Oakley’s House caught fire.

Mr. Oakley was a local businessman and in a grand philanthropic gesture he had a Public Reading Room made for the village in his own home just over 100 years ago. Unfortunately he carpeted the floor of the Reading Room with coconut matting. "You'll have a fire there one day if you are not careful," said somebody's uncle. The whole village apparently endorsed his opinion. And sure enough these words came true and the house was completely destroyed.

There was no Fire Brigade then, and people used to just make chains with buckets and do the best they could. A man from Bardfield with a horse and cart used to be called upon to assist, but the best he could offer was barrels and buckets.

The fire service has changed immensely since those early days. The current fire station was refurbished in 2009 and is only occupied when an emergency call is made.

The photos below show the old fire station in Silver Street (left) and the current station in Meadside (right).

Parking is available close to the cache location but please do not block access to the fire station.

You are looking for a 3 inch camouflaged specimen tube. Please bring your own pen or pencil. Tweezers may be helpful to remove the log.
