This series, FWP or Famous Wisconsin People, will acknowledge the accomplishments of some well-known (and maybe not so well-known) individuals from our state.
Georgia O’Keefe was born to dairy farmer parents in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin in 1887. She attended grade school and high school in Madison before her family relocated to Virginia.
O’Keefe studied art after high school, but became frustrated with her style and abandoned art for several years. She did return to her art studies and eventually began to be a recognized artist. She is most known for her close up flower blossom paintings, her depictions of New York buildings and her paintings of objects from New Mexico, where she was living part of the year in 1929. O’Keefe died in 1986 at the age of 98 years. A wonderful exhibit of her work is part of the permanent collection at the Milwaukee Art Museum.
