CATHERINE BRANT - Catherine Adonwentishon Croghan married Joseph Brant in the winter of 1780 at Fort Niagara. Catherine's parents were George Croghan, the prominent American colonist and Indian agent, and Catharine Tekarihoga, a Mohawk. Catherine, known as Adonwentishon, was head of the Turtle clan, the first in rank in the Mohawk Nation. Her birthright was to name the Tekarihoga, the principal sachem of the Mohawk nation. She was also related to John Smoke Johnson, a grandson of Sir William Johnson and relative of Chief Hendrick. Joseph and Catherine had seven children: Joseph (1784), Jacob (1785), John (whom Catherine selected as Tekarihoga at the appropriate time - 1786), Margaret (1788), Catherine (1790), Mary (1794), and Elizabeth (who married William Johnson Kerr, grandson of William Johnson - 1796).
