The Mormon Battalion was formed in Iowa in July, 1846 during the Mexican War. The Battalion's assignment was to march to San Diego to assist the US Army in the war effort. The Battalion was accompanied by the families of some of the soldiers, in addition to other settlers. A detachment of sick soldiers, as well as most of the women and children, was left at Fort Pueblo for the winter. This group established the first church, school and cemetery in Pueblo.
