C&D Placed near part of the original Oxford/ Cambridge line.
One of the great plans to reduce congestion is the rebuilding of the Oxford - Cambridge railway link. This will of course be interesting as much of the previous track has now been developed for housing, factories etc. This cache lies on the original route of the Oxford to Cambridge railway line first opened on 4th July 1862, and incorporated the older Potton to Sandy line which had opened 5 years earlier. In 1955 it was earmarked for major development to βallow freight traffic to be transferred between three railway regions and easing the burden on London marshalling yardsβ. (nothing is new) It was later decided this was not viable and on 30th December 1967 the line was closed as part of British Rails rationalisation plan. Parts of the track have found various uses including a cycle track from Sandy to Bedford (and many caches) and near Cambridge part was used to house the Mullard Radio Telescope Observatory. The telescopes run on the old rails although many have now been relayed to much wider gauges (20 feet in some cases) Park carefully occassional high speed muggles about.
