Barf: hole-in-one Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Burgerhead: Well having moved away a couple of years ago I finally got back to GZ and the cache is definitely gone. As I no longer live in the area I am archiving. Nice to have an excuse to go back up Barf though! [:)]

Geocache Description:

In a nutshell.
A steep but relatively short ascent (approx 25 mins) on a good path from the free Lake District National Park Powter How car park located at N 054° 37.660 W 003° 12.555. Good boots are recommended, as the path may be very muddy and there is a small scramble shortly before arriving at the cache.

Doing the cache.
If approaching from the suggested parking location at Powter How, cross the road to the track opposite, and walk up this track before turning right through a swing gate. Follow this path past the Clerk, a small white conical shaped rock, from which you can see the Bishop, the large white rock on the side of the fell. After another minute or so, take the left fork in the path, cross the stream and hop over the style. Then follow your GPS! It's a bit of a puff, but from here you should only be about 15 minutes or so from the cache, and the view is definitely worth it! There is a small pencil in the cache with which to sign the log, but I would recommend bringing a pen just in case. Once found, please re-hide the cache carefully as many muggles will come into very close contact with GZ on a weekly basis.

Treasure!
The cache contents when placed was loosely treasure themed. Amongst the contents is a small black bag of 'real' treasure which I thought would be a nice change from the usual gubbins. If you would like to, please feel free to take an item from this bag, but I would be very grateful if you could limit yourself to one per person, and leave the bag in the cache for future visitors to enjoy. I will try and keep this feature topped up, but can only afford to do so every so often!

Barf.
Barf stands on the south-western shore of Bassenthwaite Lake, and is easily recognised from the A66 by the large white rock standing almost half way up the fell. This is known as 'Bishop's Rock', and if you would like to know more about this interesting feature, I suggest that on the way to the cache you stop off at Bishop's Rock by THE SMILEYS. At only 468m in height, Barf is not one of the National Park's largest fells, but it enjoys spectacular views from the summit over Bassenthwaite, over to Skiddaw and back down the A66 towards Keswick. If you have the time, I would strongly recommend going on to the summit from this cache as you are already half way there and the views are well worth the trudge! When you get there, you will also be rewarded with the opportunity to pick up another cache: A Front Row Seat #1: Barf by mrcheesbrough. There are many places you can go from here if you want to make a day of it, but if you are going back down to Powter How, I particularly enjoy the direct descent down the scree and via the Bishop's Rock (4 star terrain rating). It can be a bit hairy at times and there is not much in the way of a path, so only attempt this if you have a map and good boots, and are comfortable with exploring fells off-piste! Can you find the 'Bishop of Barf' letterbox on the way down? It is not listed on geocaching.com, but if you fancy a challenge, you are looking for an ammo can.

Safety on the fells.
This is a short hop up a decent enough path for which I would recommend a minimum of good boots and waterproofs, but if you continue to the summit and/or beyond, please remember to dress appropriately and take the right kit. For more information, see the England and Wales Mountain Rescue advisory webpage or check out their handy printable leaflet.

HAPPY CACHING!

Many thanks to North and West Cumbria Forestry Commission for their kind permission to place this cache.
