Geocache Description:

The cache is a small camoe'd pill bottle at the end of a black pipe. You will need to bring your own writing tool. The cache is not hid on or within any artifact/ruin, but within a man-made rock planter wall about 9" from ground and covered with a rock. To open the cache you need to line up the lid triangle with the one on the bottle-- marked in ink.

After caching in Playacar last week, we passed the wall section of Mayan ruins on our walk back to town and decided we would come back to check it out. We put out a cache at the wall by the guarded gate and then continued on the walkway to discover these wondrous ruins! We were awestruck, especially to see how intact these small buildings were, and with a view of the beach which looked like Paradise!

Decided to use my name Linda in the name as it means beautiful in Spanish so I'm told, and felt this site deserved the title. I have done a little research on these ruins, built 1200-1500BC. This area was once known as Xaman-Ha, meaning waters of the north. It was the primary location where people would come together to travel to Cozumel where the goddess of fertility Ixchel was adored. As well it was a point where travelers would stock up on provisions before setting out on the Mayans commercials sea route which extended from Veracrus, Mexico all the way to Honduras. l have read that the palapa roof has been put on to protect the building from the eroding elements.

If you know of any further info you'd like to provide, please feel free to do so.

It is easier to come via Bahia del Espiritu Santo off of Abraira de Arriba streets once entering Playacar to the SE.

***Note: As of summer of 2016, there is new construction taking place where the lovely beach was. So sad. Also the wooden stairs have been removed nearby which helped get you over the wall from the walkway from Paseo Xaman-ha & 10 Avenue. It is still accessible though.

***Note: As of fall 2017 Someone couldn't find the cache so has replaced it so there could be 3 caches there as I also put out another spare cache about 1m from the original in yet another planter of old rocks and fan palm. The black pipe at the original cache is the camo and there should be a pill bottle at the other end so you need to pull it out.
