Geocache Description:

Cache overlooking the Ballona Saltwater Marsh.



This cache is placed along an access road between the Ballona Creek and the Ballona Wetlands. The gate from the Playa del Rey side is usually locked, pedestrian access is around the fence, over the rocks.

This is the estuarine or brackish marsh portion of the Ballona Wetlands. There is also a freshwater marsh on the other side of Culver Blvd. across from the Playa Vista development.

This is a cool place to see a semi-wild estuarine marsh. On the one side is the Ballona Creek, the concreted drainage for the western Los Angeles watershed. On the other side is the Ballona Wetlands Ecological Preserve, which has been undergoing restoration for a number of years.

Mornings are a great time to visit; you can often see cranes, egrets and herons hunting for fish in the estuary.

The big structure, close to GZ, which is in-between the creek and the wetlands is a self-regulating tidal gate, which is in place to help regulate the amount of salt water that goes into the marsh during high tides. The red floats help to close the gates during high water.

Don't go over the fence into the wetlands (it's prohibited) - the cache is accessible from the road. This is a log only cache - don't forget your writing implement!

If do you want to explore within the salt marsh - Friends of Ballona Wetlands does a guided tour of the saltwater marsh about once a month. They also have an marsh open-house day once a month, where you can explore the trails in the dunes and wetlands on your own. A lot more information on the ecology of the area on their website.
