A BICYCLE PATH NIRVANA
In the past, you could bicycle thru this area with no trouble. For a couple of years Braes Bayou has been in the process of being widened to ease flood problems. The bicycle trails were removed to facilitate this work. Now there are signs that the trails may be reopened in the not too distant future.
When completed, you will be able to bicycle from the tennis center at Gessner and Bissonett on the west side of Houston to McGregor Park and the University of Houston on the east side – over 17 miles one way. The trails near the cache pass under S. Main, Holcombe, Almeda and the 288 Freeway. Just east of 288 you can connect to the Columbia Tap Trail and ride north to downtown Houston near the new soccer stadium. Once there you can also connect to the Harrisburg Trail running east to near the ship channel turning basin. With some adroit on street riding and careful navigating around the construction at U of H Downtown you can get on the Heights Bicycle Trail.
Between Holcombe and Almeda you can leave the trails and ride to the Houston Zoo and into the Museum District. The Art Museum and Sculpture Garden are nearby. The Museum of Natural History and the Rose Garden are down a hard granite path. A few blocks north of Herman Park are the Holocaust Museum, the Children’s Museum and the new Asian Museum.
In the park there are bridges dedicated to walkers and cyclist.
You can easily move from the north to the south side of the bayou. The cache is located in the little used south east corner of the park. Here you will find restrooms, picnic areas, the bike paths and a nature path. Parking is available off Almeda just north of Holcombe. A final word of caution - where there are ticks there are also chiggers. Come enjoyj the area and find the cache.
