Our’ little museum is housed in part of the old Kronendal School. The first school in the now ‘Republic’ was established in 1892 and subsequently moved around the ‘Republic’ a number of times. In 1917 the need for a new school building became urgent due to ever growing numbers – 66 pupils.
The new school was built between St Anthony’s and St Andrew’s Roads in 1918 and pupils moved in in 1919. The new school was ideal as it was in the centre of the village.
In 1965 the school changed its name to Kronendal Primary School. The name came from the old homestead “Kronendal”.
During August 1975 the school moved once again into the present building.
After a festival of Arts and Crafts was held, it was decided that this area had a fascinating history and that it was important that a permanent home be found where information and artefacts belonging to the past could be gathered together and preserved for the future
The official opening of the museum was on 5th April 1979
The museum has been closed due to renovations but it is hoped to re-open in June 2012.
Exhibitions are divided into three categories –broadly speaking: history of the village, natural history, fishing and forts. Take a short stroll through the Medicinal Garden as well. Enjoy your visit.
Get your passport at the Museum! Open Weekdays only from 9am – 4pm
For security the property has now been fenced. Access to the Museum and garden is from Andrews Road. Access to the cache site can be made through the Museum grounds during opening hours. Otherwise from St Anthony's Road where there is off road parking. The curator of the Museum and his staff are fully aware of the cache.
The cache is available any time as it is outside the security fence
