This cache is near to the start of the steep climb up Maungawhakamana. This peak is 728 metres above sea level, and takes about 1 and half hours to climb, say 3 to 4 hours round trip. Maungawhakamana is woven into the history of the area along with Tarawera, Putauaki and Whakaari.
The Tarawera Falls are the most spectacular falls in the Bay of Plenty.
The Tarawera River plunges 65 metres down a sheer cliff face before tumbling down bush lined rapids.
Vehicle access to Tarawera Falls and Outlet is along forest roads, which requires an access permit, costing $5.00 per vehicle.
Directions and Permits are available from the Kawerau Information Centre on Plunket Street, Kawerau, open each day between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm.
Remember to have head lights on since there are logging trucks and hunters in the forest.
