Geocache Description:

Start of Maungawhakamana Climb. This geocache is No.3 of six caches in a series on the way the Tarawera Falls. All of these are on the main public access road to the falls, there is no need to go off on any side roads.

Cache is a small Sistema container with log book and small items.

This cache is near to the start of the steep climb up Maungawhakamana. This peak is 728 metres above sea level, and takes about 1 and half hours to climb, say 3 to 4 hours round trip. Maungawhakamana is woven into the history of the area along with Tarawera, Putauaki and Whakaari.

The Tarawera Falls are the most spectacular falls in the Bay of Plenty.

The Tarawera River plunges 65 metres down a sheer cliff face before tumbling down bush lined rapids.

Vehicle access to Tarawera Falls and Outlet is along forest roads, which requires an access permit, costing $5.00 per vehicle.

Directions and Permits are available from the Kawerau Information Centre on Plunket Street, Kawerau, open each day between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm.

Remember to have head lights on since there are logging trucks and hunters in the forest.

There is none or limited cell phone coverage in the forest
