Geocache Description:

Since Old Rt. 63 had been retired, we wanted to put another cache around the back of the dam. This cache will take you around the back of the dam to the tailwater area.

Hopefully, you will enjoy the sight of the water going under a massive keystone bridge that used to be a railroad trestle for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company. The company operated this particular rail line during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century’s. It is possible that this arch culvert was built as early at 1868 and was in place prior to the trestle being built. The culvert has been cemented together as a means of lessening the possibility of the keystone falling out. Please enjoy the beautiful sight. Please stay off the concrete tailwater structure directly behind/attached to the dam as it is an unsafe area.
You may see a few water snakes in the area, they like to hang out on the rocks. Please take note, rocks may be slippery.
Hop Brook is a US Army Corps of Engineers park. We have received permission form the Corps to place this cache. The park is open from 8:00 a.m. – about a half hour before sunset. There is a fee $4.00 per vehicle to enter the park (fee booth is open the weekend before Memorial Day to the weekend after Labor Day from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. During the off-season, there is a small parking lot you can park in and walk down into the park. For further details on Hop Brook Lake check out the following link: (visit link)
Fee booth attendants and park kiosks usually have maps for you to use.
Check out other caches hidden in the park. We believe there are a few President’s series letterboxes hidden in the park as well.
NOTE: Cache will be available on 5/19/2012 @ 10:00 am as a part of our “Family Fishing and Fun Day” event for National Kids to Parks Initiative. The event will be held at the Pines Shelter in the park. Admission fee to the park will be waived for this event.
