Geocache Description:

The cache container is a PET tube in a camouflage bag.

It is hidden near a monument dedicated to a very tragic event that occurred here March the 30th - 31st 1849, during the famine.

A crowd of around 700 starving people, including many women and children gathered in Louisburgh seeking food assistance or certificates of destitution in order to be admitted to the local workhouse from the relieving officer.

They were informed that they would have to apply to the Board of Guardians, two of whom, Colonel Hograve and Mr. Lecky were meeting the next day at Delphi Lodge, ten miles away. Having spent the night in the open at Louisburgh the crowd traversed the mountain pass at Doolough the next day, and proceeded on foot to Delphi. They arrived wet and cold that afternoon at Delphi, the members of the Board were at lunch and would not be disturbed. When they finally did meet with them, all assistance was refused. The crowd despondently began their return journey to Louisburgh.

The weather became steadily worse with high winds, rain and snow, up to 400 of these souls already very weak from starvation, died of exposure along the way with a large number of them being blown from the rocky path down the slopes and into the lake where they never had a chance. The road you see now was built later.

It is recorded afterwards that the path from the Louisburgh to the Glankeen River and from the Glankeen to Delphi was covered with corpses “as numerous as sheaves of corn in an autumn field.” (James Berry, Bunowen, County Mayo, 1849)

The cross was erected in 1994.

Stand behind the cross facing the slope. The cache is about 15m away in the rock face slightly to the right.
