Nearby there is a sandwich and hotdog restaurant that is a local Elgin legend, and they have $3 Italian beefs on Wednesday. The last time I got one on the way in to work I saw this spot and thought it was really tragic that a cache wasn't hidden there. So have taken care of that.

It's also my first hide since finding my first GPSr while cleaning this week! The Magellan 315 does one thing really well: gives you coordinates. It was the reason, back in 2007, that I found a couple of dozen caches that year and then didn't find another one for almost 10 months. Back then I had to locate the area I planned to hunt in, print out a stack of papers, and carry them all around as I hunted. I felt bad about all the trees that fell to support my habit.

Then I got a Garmin Vista HCx (which I lost later) and paperless caching not only saved a lot of trees, it liberated me to just go and hunt without much preparation, other than loading the caches into the unit via USB. While it didn't show a live map like my iPhone, it made caching really easy.

I took out the corroded batteries, wondering if the thing still worked.. It does! The first screen reminded me of a hilarious oddity of setting it up... To locate satellites it asks you the Long/Latt for your location... Seriously?? Isn't that what the GPSr is supposed to tell you? Five years ago I had to find my house on Google Maps to enter my location, but this week I just used my iPhone.

So, now that I really just use my iPhone for Geocaching, I sometimes wonder how accurate the coordinates are. Despite not being WAAS-enabled, the 315 was always very accurate. It was slow, and would give you a bread-crumb trail on a monochrome screen, but the "map" was pretty useless, other than pre-loaded waypoints, which I never used.

For this cache I sat the 315 next to my iPhone and the coordinates were nearly identical, except that the 315 W unit ended in "013." So, I figure the iPhone is doing pretty well.
