Geocache Description:

The Mount Airy Graniteers began in 1932 as part of the Blue Ridge Semi-Pro League. They were renamed the “Reds” in 1935 and were the farm team for the Cincinnati Reds in 1935 and 1936 and for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1937. The team played at Reddick Field six days a week during baseball season. On Sundays, the game was moved to Veteran’s Park, because they were not allowed to play baseball in town on Sundays.

This cache celebrates the boys of summer. Their field of dreams is now the parking lot behind the city building, but a granite monument marks where their home plate would have been. For more of a challenge, use the home plate coordinates (36° 29.827, 80° 36.403) and try to locate the cache based on the cache name. Cache is small, BYOP, but there is enough room for a FTF prize.

This cache was placed as part of a set researched by the Jesse Franklin Chapter of the Tar Heel Junior Historians. The THJH is a state organization sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of History to encourage students to discover the history in North Carolina and in their local communities. The Jesse Franklin Chapter is comprised of students from Mount Airy and Surry County Schools, and is sponsored by the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History.
