Transfer Beach
In 1859 Transfer Beach was known as Oyster Point, named by Captian Richards as he was surveying the coast line and the abundance of oysters. In 1889, wharf building, erection of coal bunkers and a copper smelter was built and soon there was a single mill and cabins on the shore. It also became a place for swimming and boating at Transfer Wharf. In 1951 the government built Fisher's Wharf and the breakwater was built in 1951.It was here that all the coal and other industries loaded and transferred to waiting ships. In the mid-1960s the town began to develop Transfer Beach as a park, which officially opened July 1, 1967. Today there is a playground, spray park, band shelter, picnic shelter, sandbox, beach play and kayak rentals and more.
