Snow Kirk Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

uncoiled_tiger: It is with some sadness I've decided to archive rather than replace this cache. I not longer live close enough to maintain it and I think there's scope for a really great cache to go in this fascinating area. Many thanks to everyone who said how interesting the location was having never visited before.

Geocache Description:

An often overlooked corner of the the Univeristy of Aberdeen campus. Please note that the cache is not in the church yard itself and no stonework needs to be moved in order to locate the cache but the cache is in the immediate vicinity of the kirk yard itself.

The Snow Kirk was established in 1497. What is now a churchyard was originally the church itself. Named for the miracle of snow in a Roman August, which has come down through five centuries as the Snow Kirk.

It was built as the parish church of Old Aberdeen so that the Cathedral and King’s College Chapel could be left free for more ceremonial events. Although built as a parish church, the Snow Kirk lost that function when its congregation was merged with St Machar’s in 1499

As for the church yard itself, no record of burials exists prior to 1776, but by the beginning of last century 160 names were registered. All but 13 date from before 1880, and the graveyard was declared full in 1934.

Update: A few people have been having trouble with their GPS signal in the area due to tree cover. The location marked on the geocaching map is accurate and may be worth checking before you set off.
