An easy drive-by cache in Stromness. Please take care as the grass can be slippery. This can be a very busy spot on fine days so stealth may well be required. Please replace the cache carefully so it is jammed in and cannot be blown away during storms!
During the 18th and 19th centuries ships avoided the war-torn Channel by sailing around the North of Scotland. A multitude of vessels in and around Stromness meant there was always work for local pilots and boatmen. This outcrop provided an ideal vantage point for lookout for vessels approaching through Scapa Flow and from the Pentland Firth.
The Stromness Voluntary Artillery (founded 1862) maintained a battery of cannon at the Point of Ness. One of these cannons was mounted on the "Look-out" before World War I and removed in 1941 to make room for an anti-aircraft gun emplacement to defend Scapa Flow.
The cache is a 35mm film canister with log and pencil.
