St Marie’s originally became known as ‘St Marie’s on the Sands’ because it was actually built on the sand of Southport! In July 1840 the foundation stone was laid. Two Schools and Presbytery were later erected then the new school and convent were opened in 1876. St Marie’s school eventually closed in April 1968. Homes for retired priests were created from the old presbytery and parish hall, the old convent became the Parish House (the place where the Parish priest lives). Later the old school/parish centre became the ‘Marian Centre for Evangelisation. Presbytery and Convent, countless housekeepers, priests and religious sisters have given what they could to those who came to the door, this good will continues to this day in response to the needy.
