Geocache Description:

Easy park and grab cache that forms part of the Shipwreck Series. For the series methodology and more info visit SS: Shipwreck Series via the related web page link.

This is one of the closest spots to get to in the cordoned off area above the scene of the most recent wreck on the South African coast.

The 50 metre long-line Japanese trawler named Eihatsu Maru that ran aground around 5.15am on 12 May 2012 in thick fog. 28 crew members and a dog were on board. Currently 8 crew including the Captain and his border collie named Alley remain onboard.

The Eihatsu Marus (call sign JFQW) was built in 1986 has a beam of 9 meters and draws 4 meters of water, although at the moment it is drawing Clifton beach sand. How it ended up on the beach remains a mystery as its engine and generators remain operational. It is carrying some 90 tons of fuel and ammonia on board as well as 20 tons of tuna.

Efforts to re-float her are currently underway, but prospects of a successful salvage are rapidly diminishing.
