Muskrats are one of the few semi-aquatic rodents, with a nearly waterproof overcoat and webbed feet. They have stiff, reddish-brown hairs and are 40-60 cm in length (almost half of that is in the tail alone), weighing about 1.5Kg.
Their primary habitat is wetlands, but they have adapted well to man-made irrigation canals despite rampant habitat destruction by humans.
Thankfully, we now recognize the importance of wetlands both for water filtration as well as the local food chain.
