Geocache Description:

John Whitton was the Engineer-In-Charge for New South Wales Railways from 1856 to 1899. It is estimated that under his supervision, 3,494km of railway was completed in NSW & Victoria. He was responsible for the construction of the Blue Mountains railway line and parts of the Main Western line, in particular the Great Zig Zag near Lithgow.

Whitton's works include railway stations, railway bridges, viaducts, railway yards and other infrastructure. 25 of these items are listed on the NSW Heritage Register as significant, and another 37 works are listed as significant in various local government areas.

There is a memorial dedicated to Whitton near the location of this cache, close to the Lapstone zig zag walking track, commemorating his substantial seven-span sandstone Lapstone Knapsack viaduct. This viaduct can be seen if you take a quick walk up the road.

The ruins of a sandstone cottage can also be seen near this cache. This was the residence of the railway gatekeeper for this rail crossing, and was once known as Green Gables. It was built in 1887 and destroyed in the 1968 bushfire.

Gatekeepers Cottage, location unknown

Twelve identical cottages were built across the Mountains. Four of these remain intact, at Valley Heights, Springwood, Mt Victoria and Medlow Bath. They are used as private residences and guesthouses.

The cache is a small sistema container. Please try to return the natural camo to position.

Congratulations to Alcan 4x4 as FTF
