Three Billy Goats Gruff is a fairy tale first published between 1841 and 1844. The story introduces three male goats, There is no grass left for them to eat near to where they live, so they must cross a river to get to a meadow or hillside on the other side of a stream in order to eat and get fat.
To do so, they must first cross a bridge, under which lives a fearsome troll who eats anyone who passes that way. The smallest billy goat is the first to cross and is immediately stopped by the troll who threatens to "gobble him up!" The little goat convinces him to wait for the bigger billy goat to come across because he is larger and more gratifying as a feast. The greedy troll agrees and lets the smallest goat cross.
The middle goat sees that the youngest one has crossed and reaches the conclusion that the bridge must be safe after all, but is also stopped by the troll and given the same threat. The second billy goat is allowed to cross as well after he tells the troll to wait for the biggest billy goat because he will have the most meat. The third billy goat then gets on the bridge, and is stopped by the hungry troll.
When the troll gets up on the bridge however, the third billy goat is so big, that he easily throws the troll into the stream with his horns and crosses the bridge. From then on the bridge is safe, and all three goats are able to go to the rich fields around the summer farm in the hills. They all live happily ever after. The troll however was never seen again. Or was it? The three goats together know the location of the troll.

Three Billy Goats Gruff is een sprookje dat voor het eerst is gepubliceerd tussen 1841 en 1844. Het verhaal introduceert drie bokken die een rivier moeten oversteken om bij een weide te komen met sappige gras zodat ze hun buikjes vol kunnen eten, omdat er geen gras meer is waar ze op dit moment leven.
Om aan de overkant van de rivier te komen, moeten ze een brug oversteken, maar onder de brug woont een hele enge trol die iedereen die de brug betreedt opeet. De kleinste bok is de eerste die de brug oversteekt en hij wordt meteen gestopt door de trol die dreigt hem op te eten met huid en haar. De kleinste bok overtuigt de trol hem te laten gaan en te wachten op de tweede bok want die is groter en zal de trol meer bekoren. De gulzige trol stemt toe en laat de kleinste bok veilig oversteken.
De middel grote bok ziet dat de kleinste bok aan de overkant is aangekomen en concludeert dat de brug daarom veilig moet zijn en ook hij waagt de oversteek. Weer komt de trol te voorschijn en stopt ook de middel grote bok en dreigt hem met huid en haar op te eten. De middel grote bok vertelt de trol dat de laatste bok het grootste is en de trol dus het meeste zal opleveren en overtuigd door de belofte van een nog groter feestmaal laat de trol ook de middel grote bok veilig oversteken.
Nu is het de beurt aan de grootste bok om de brug over te steken. De hongerige trol springt weer te voorschijn, maar de derde bok is zo groot dat hij met gemak de trol op zijn hoorns neemt en hem in de rivier gooit en dan veilig de overkant van de rivier bereikt.
Vanaf dat moment is de brug voor altijd veilig en de bokken kunnen naar hartelust de rivier over steken om het sappige gras aan de overkant te eten. Ze leefden nog lang en gelukkig en niemand heeft ooit meer iets van de trol gehoord.
